Academics and Programs

Art Adventurers is an after-school group for second through fifth-grade students who love making art and are excited to explore new ways to create!

Throughout the meetings, students will experiment with different art styles, techniques, and mediums, building their artistic skills while discovering new ways to express their own ideas. We’ll explore a variety of projects using drawing, painting, mixed media, and more, with opportunities to try techniques and materials students may not normally get to use.

Art Adventurers is a place to experiment, take creative risks, develop your own artistic style, and—most importantly—have fun making art! No two adventures will be exactly the same.

A school wide competition between teams of 5 students who read assigned books vetted by WCS.  The winner of Sunset’s tournament will have a field trip TBD in Marh to compete in the district-wide Battle of the Books Competition.  Parent permission is required.  A list a books will be sent via email to teams prior to distributing books to students in late November.  Times and dates for before school tournament play will be emailed to teams in February.

Best Buddies International is dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, inclusive living, and family support for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).  Best Buddies works to help those with and without IDD build meaningful relationships. 

In our first year, our chapter had 64 members and 17 chapter events! We were recognized at the Nashville Friendship Walk as the Tennessee Outstanding Elementary School Chapter of the Year! We gathered twice a month for the entire school year! These events ranged from tie-dying t-shirts, Friendsgiving breakfast potluck, disability awareness educational activities, and even our own spring dance in May with 90 people in attendance. We also raised $2,360 for the Nashville Friendship Walk and had 44 registered team members!

If you have a love of books and reading, then this is the place for you! Join us once a month to learn about different genres and authors and share your favorite books.

The purpose of the Sunset Math Team is to create an environment where students who love math can come together to be challenged and explore math in a new way. This season of math team will include creativity, challenge, and fun! Students will have the opportunity to create a strategic math game for STREAM night in the Spring. The Math Team is for 4^th and 5^th grade students and will be meeting on Friday mornings from 8:00 to 8:30AM. The sign up for Math team will be coming from your child's homeroom teacher after fall break!

Media Team members are 5^th grade students who are in charge of making the overhead morning announcements as well as creating, filming, editing and producing a weekly morning show to be aired on the school's closed-circuit network.

This has 2 different tracks.

The first track is the Pokemon Card Collection track.  We will learn what makes Pokemon cards collectible, what to look for in building your collection, how to grade your cards and what grading means, and learning to trade fairly. This track meets once per month Sept-December after school from 4pm - 5pm in the library.

The second track is Pokemon Gaming. We will learn the basics of Pokemon gaming and at least two different gaming styles, how to build a gaming card deck, and fair trade.  We may have a couple of guest speakers, depending on availability.  This track meets once per month after school in the library from 4pm - 5pm from January - May:   Parent permission forms for the second track will be available in December.

Grades 2 - 5

Start the day moving with Run SSES! Open to students of all ability levels, Run SSES is a fun and encouraging way to get active before the school day begins. Whether you love to run, prefer to walk, or want to do a little of both with a cartwheel in between, everyone is welcome!

Each week, students will have opportunities to run, walk, tackle obstacle courses, participate in relay races, and take on other fun fitness challenges. Students will also receive weekly recognition as they reach new milestones and celebrate their individual achievements.

And Run SSES isn’t just for kids—parents are encouraged to join in too! Come move, have fun, set goals, and start the day strong together!

Scribble Squad is a fun, hands-on art group for kindergarten and first-grade students who love to create, explore, and get a little messy! Each meeting, we’ll play with color, texture, and a variety of art materials and mediums while creating unique works of art.

There’s no “perfect” art in Scribble Squad! Students will be encouraged to experiment, use their imaginations, and discover new ways to express their creativity. From painting and printing to collage, mixed media, and more, every meeting will be a new creative adventure.

The Sunset Players will rehearse and perform theatrical productions.

Learn about different writing genres, get tips on writing, be inspired to create your own work, learn and practice peer editing and choose to submit an original piece for inclusion in our self-published anthology.  After school from 4-5 pm in the library.

Build, code and compete against other elementary schools on Sunset’s Vex Competitive Robotics Teams.  Students will apply for a team and if accepted, pay $50 to cover a team jersey and team tournament fees.  Practice schedule is every Thursday afternoon from 4-5 in the library AND monthly Thursday evening scrimmages off campus.
